EXPERIENCE THE GRAPHIC REALITY OF DEATH, CLOSE UP ...
Underground legend Joel Potrykus’s latest is a queasy and hilarious anxiety dream of men stuck in the desperate middle. Two friends (Potrykus and Joshua Burge) trudge through a Michigan forest with the intention of following through on a disturbing pact. Once their plan goes shockingly awry, the haunting consequences of their failure can't stay hidden for long.
Fans of Potrykus’s singular portraits of slackers on the verge will recognise these characters from his breakout hit Buzzard (2014), though his latest film functions as a standalone movie. A mix of metal and opera soundtracks the brutal passage of time as bad decisions pile up. Star Burge’s face seems made for the gaze of fuzzy 16mm. A movie for anyone who’s dreamed of leaving it all behind but still pays rent.

“Five years after the birth of my one and only son, and I'm mostly consumed with fears of inadequacy, abandonment, and mortality; going to prison by accident, falling off a cliff by accident, jumping off a cliff by accident. Vulcanizadora is my most heartfelt and personal work, but not in a good way.” - Joel Potrykus
“I've seen enough low-effort trash … that watching a film made with great care and skill – including two fantastic lead performances, by Potrykus himself and his muse Joshua Burge – is a wonderful and much-needed reminder of why I love movies in the first place. Essential.” - Lucinda Mason, Letterboxd
