BUFF is back! From May 14-17, Brunswick Underground Film Festival (or BUFF, for short) takes over the heart of Brunswick with four days of forward-thinking screenings of underground, independent, cult, trash and schlock films. Taking over five screens at Balam Balam Place, with additional marquee screenings at Brunswick Picture House, BUFF is a non-stop barrage of high-quality cinema, right on your doorstep*.
Art and entertainment should be accessible to everyone; following a highly successful inaugural edition, we've made the unprecedented decision to reduce the price of our already affordable tickets even further to $15 ($12.50 concession/$10 unwaged) for the majority of our program, with marquee sessions at Brunswick Picture House a mere $20 ($17 concession). We also have 5-film passes ($65) available to make it easier to traverse the program. The best move, however, is as always, to pick up a full festival pass - a bargain at $135 (less than $7 per film!)
The festival kicks off with an extremely rare presentation of Ken Russell's infamous and blasphemous masterpiece The Devils, screening in its most uncut form to date, honouring its 55th anniversary. Tickets for our opening night soiree are just $20 and include a drink on arrival from our friends at CoConspirators Brewing Co.
Other retrospective highlights include John Cameron Mitchell's adults-only treatise on sexuality Shortbus, Cheryl Dunye's trailblazing Black lesbian Clerks The Watermelon Woman, and a 45th anniversary screening of Abel Ferrara's iconic revenge shocker Ms .45. New highlights include Louise Weard's highly-anticipated latest entry into her notorious cinema verite anthology, Castration Movie Chapter iii. Junior Ghosts—Premorphic Drift; a fragmentary passage, Marcie Hume's intimate peek behind the curtain of child-star chaos Corey Feldman Vs. The World, cinema from the frontlines of Palestine, With Hasan In Gaza, and Moviejuice's very own Gabriel Bath's aptly named The Next Time You Feel Important.
With a little help from our friends at Umbrella Entertainment, we've also added a free outdoor screening program Friday and Saturday evening at Balam Balam Place, where you'll be able to catch favourites Shaolin Soccer, Report to Mother, Microcosmos, Rad, and Dead End Drive-In.
Finally, the program features a free industry symposium, throughout Saturday, aimed at upskilling emerging filmmakers, critics, programmers and screening groups. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.
Films will screen simultaneously across our six screens, in discrete blocks, so you can pack the most into your movie-going day. Huge thanks to the homies at Thornbury Picture House, CoConspirators Brewing Co, Heaps Normal, and MemoryLab. You can explore the full program here (desktop highly recommended), with tickets to all sessions on sale now!
