John Cameron Mitchell's iconic, pulsating explosion of identity, gender and unsimulated sex in glorious 4K—still breaking ground and pushing boundaries 20 years on...
Various New York City characters navigate the comic/tragic intersections between sex and love, in and around the titular modern-day polysexual underground salon. One of our tales follows Sofia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist who has never had an orgasm, and meets Severin (Lindsay Beamish), a female dominatrix who tries to help her.
The entire film is sexually explicit and provocative: depicting surprising and impressive sex acts right as the film opens. But your heart will be teased right along with other organs, as director John Cameron Mitchell focuses deeply on his characters' emancipation of identitity and paths to self discovery. It's a unique nexus of art, music, politics and sex, suggesting new strategies for reconciling the unique pressures of post-9/11 NYC.
