Don't come to school tomorrow... a timely debut exploring youth, alienation and the culture of narcissism from director Oscar Boyson (producer of Frances Ha and Uncut Gems)
Like a dark Dear Evan Hansen but with less singing and about as much crying, this jet-black satire aims directly at the narcissism of online life. Teen stars Jaeden Martell and Asa Butterfield play a modern-day odd couple: a performative gun control activist yearning for his crush's attention, and the Texas kid who's trolling him.
Where should our sympathies lie, once Martell impulsively travels to meet Butterfield and the pair's alienation gives way to something like friendship? Boyson doesn't offer any easy answers, instead offering a black mirror of algorithmic corruption right back at us. Jennifer Ehle and Noah Centineo co-star.
