GIRLS JUST WANT TO SHOOT A SNUFF FILM IN THIS LO-FI, DESTINED-TO-BE GUTTER CLASSIC
Co-Presented with Tilde
Two maladapted young women, both part of the same internet gore enthusiast community, formulate a plan to meet in person with the intent that one will kill the other, film the killing, and then sell the cameras that “watched” to an unsuspecting customer online in the hopes of spurring on a “new era of death.”
Inspired in equal parts by mumblecore, shot-on-video horror, and a deep unease formed by the internet’s mass syndication of violence, ivine Hammer is the debut feature by the multimedia duo of Hazel and Mae M. Despite its focus on annihilation and snuff, this miniDV hangout verges on sweet, and finds something like hope in the viscera. DEATH USED TO BE SPELLBINDING. NOW, WHY BOTHER?

"DIVINE HAMMER feels so modern with its discord screens, and post-internet malaise, and feels new even while the image is shot on analog technology. The inbetween-ness of the form feels like an unconsciously deep and valuable space for queer cinema of the 21st century to thrive. I find it exciting, even if it challenges us to question notions of cinematic beauty." - Willow Maclay, Co-Author of Corpses, Fools and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema
"Absolutely joyous ... ends up being a film about how charming people whose minds have been cooked by the modern world can still come together [and] find their passions in the ways they least expect." - Justin Decloux, The Important Cinema Club
